Yes and no because on the one hand you should care about your citizens and on the other hand you should also care about keeping peace with the other nations.

The reason we are in a country is because it differs from the rest one way or another. If the world is changing and our country is focusing more on controlling or pushing conflicts with the rest rather than their citizens. We end up having to take the hits for a conflict we never signed up for.
